rambling

I have the feeling when I am drawing something myself I have always the feeling that is misses something. Drawings above aren't really solid or appealing. I think the only way to work on getting better at this that is to keep on trying.

Line weight could be better of the lion, some lines are too thin. They almost disappear.

On the dude with the pencil I tryed to do really my best. But it's gotten a bit generic. The pencil drawing is really stiff and the lines are too carefull placed. Maybe my drawings needs more "guts".

My girlfriend says that I am drawing too cute. She says that because she knows that I like insane weird stuff... Kinda strange that I don't draw more crazy stuff..

I really admire allot of artist that seems to found what they like to draw (see my list of links).

But maybe it comes with the years and I think that it is usefull to focus on skill and principels first. Im only drawing for 2 years now (since childhood).

George getting insane!

UPDATE

Im making it myself hard, I didn't had to do the whole ink again. I just had to fix the eyes.

I also think I need to think more about construction when inking. Like Amir, he made construction guides in the eyes of george to help give depth in the eyes. Here.

UPDATE

*Still need to close the gaps

UPDATE

Gotta go for the bus! Tommorow I have more time.

UPDATE

I tried to be as critical as I could. Hmm the hair on the top of his head could be a bit thicker. (I only changed frame 7 in the middle)

Note: I didn' closed all the gaps yet. Are the iresses correct? Does he eats the table like in frame 5?

Man I really like those crazy expressions!

daff animation

I studied 3 frames from Clampett's "Draftee Daffy". I will try to do the others soon.

I found the screens from the Classic Cartoons blog

stuff

ASIFA posted a great post about a cartoon from the Fleischers and Natwick. These poses are from the cartoon Mariutch.

Some loose sketches of Elmer. I try to do this as much as possible, to get the feeling of making own poses and expressions.

And some girls!

And some other stuff. Looked at cartoons you see now. El Tigre is one of the cartoons I liked the most, too bad there's not gonna be a season 2.

And some faces.

Kurtzman and composition

John K posted a topic about Kurtzman and composition

I wanted to try to study some backgrounds like that. It will help me understand backgrounds better.

There are really allot of flow in these drawings. Great! Or I am seeing ghosts...

Woody!

UPDATE at the end/middle of the post

Woody is a great character!

I made some studies of the illustrations John K posted on his blog.

I wanted to do some own poses. A light table and thinner paper would be handy. I got stuck with his spout and I wen to classic cartoons to do some small research.

When seeing these pictures, I realized I need to push myself more. Try to do some crazy things. I have the feeling I hold myself back.

I really like this insane stuff! Man, I don't want to be in the shoes of that customer! I wish I had seen more of these cartoons (and old WB cartoons offcourse) when I whas a kid, it would have blown my mind, Im sure of it! They should put it more on tv these days, that would inspire allot of kids.

I tried to do some more wacky stuff. Somehow the rough sketches seems better then the clean ups. I don't have a light table so I needed to made them from reference.

Trying to learn some things about backgrounds... Need to learn allot.
Perspective, shapes etc.

george and kids

I really like these crazy faces. We don't see that very often anymore in animation.. I think the line thickness could be better on some points.

Exercise doodles:
The george drawings are study's from sketches from Rex Hackelberg. I based the girls loosly on Sody. And the 2 dog drawings from preston Blair, not really great copy's but I made them pretty fast. I wanted to try to make some own expresions of the dog, but I didn't got that far.

figuring out Sody

I made the most mistakes at the fingers.

I studied a drawing of Sody, I got the drawing from John K his blog.

Getting the construction right and proportions.

Starting adding details and small adjustments.

Final.
Next Im gonna try to do some own sketches of Sody

The weather really sucks here this summer, in Holland...
I miss going on a vacation trip like last year in Barcelona with Harmke.... Let's go again soon.

george

There are some wrongs in his left hand. I started wrong and because of that I didn't had enough space for the cigaretes on the paper I was drawing on. And I need to train my pencil lines, I really put them slow, but I want to be able to make quick strokes that give more life and dynamic. Besides that it takes me a long time to get the main proportions right for the construction.

Grrrr

Oyeah, next time I need to think about the little angles in the lines as well.

Caricature

I really like to be able to draw own caricatures, but I never do it that much. I think because I think I can never learn it. So I want to push myself to learn it.
Besides that I want to learn how to draw in ps. Because that is more close to the real thing than in illu.

Before looking furtere, can you geuss who this is?

This is how it turned out. Again a long way to learn things. It is much better then my first caricature of Al, but the hair could be way better. And maybe I should try to use lesser lines and try to get a flow in the face with long strong lines. But that a thing I need to practise. Im used to get smooth lines in illu even when I draw slow, but in photo I realy need to make quick strokes to get them smooth. Hard! But you get more life I suppose.

I started with searching for different heads.

Here you can see the progress, the oldest don't look at al at all. After each version I layed an other layer and draw a "better" version over it. So I could see what I did wrong and what I did good.

How do you think he is? Does the final version looks a bit like Al? I really could use some feedback. Even if you think it's crap, tell me why.

Tom Richmonds tutorials helpt me allot. Are there some more good tutorials out there? Or books.
