Felix the cat, backgrounds study

John K posted some covers on his blog, I used one of them to make a background study.

I want to learn how to make drawings like this. Where backgrounds and characters are one whole. With this study im trying to understand how the artist is planning this, so I could apply it to my own drawings.
Here I made a study, it's quite hard because you have to manage allot of things. I did it quite fast and think I could have done a better job if I take some more time for it. I will do that next time, I think I can learn really allot of these study's.

Made one with the focus on the characters. I think i could have got the lines better.

There are some wrongs in his left hand. I started wrong and because of that I didn't had enough space for the cigaretes on the paper I was drawing on. And I need to train my pencil lines, I really put them slow, but I want to be able to make quick strokes that give more life and dynamic. Besides that it takes me a long time to get the main proportions right for the construction.

Grrrr

Oyeah, next time I need to think about the little angles in the lines as well.

Hee I inked He hog, I started by making a drawing of the sculpture John K posted on his blog.

I started offcourse with the construction, I tried to be as accurate as I can.A break offcourse with a real melon shake.

finished ink. For the Ink I used an ink from John K as reference for the colors. The ink is digitaly made.

He hog is really fun to do, I really like how he is build. He has reall muscles but stylished.

I did this ripping friend study from Jim Smith. Im working on a character with allot of muscels on my other blog, so studying ripping friends should help.

George is fun to draw, I think because of the organic forms.
Here are some quick sketches to understand his construction better.

I did this one for getting the proportions right. I think that small mistakes in the construction will cause big mistakes later with the details in the proces. Next try I will scan in an earlier stage.

George

Practising George, got the images from John K's blog.

He posted allot of drawings of George, so allot of drawings to study. I think the linens are a bit to shaky I will try a softer pencil.

Another attempt

This one is better but still allot of details are not like the original. You neither can't see the construction anymore, when doing this one I often corrected the drawing. The linens also looks a bit mooshy, Maybe a too soft pencil.

Can anyone tell me what the advantage is of using a drawing table instead of a flat tabel to work on?

I started with these roughs, I find the poses better in the roughs (much more life).

I tried it again and I wanted to loosen up. I learn allot of doing this.

I wanted to make a caricature of Bullwinkle, but I think it is to subtle.

I think rocky is great. But I find him hard to draw..

When generic is a good thing

Yesterday I made this lion in the first pose. It is really a generic character.
P Rizzo brought me on the Idea to use a modelsheet from a Tom & Jerry cartoon and make some of those poses with my character, because the Lion have the same basic construction as Jerry. I think it whas a good excersice, I noticed some things when I whas working on it (for the next drawing). The inking is also gooing much faster, maybe I did this one to fast and to sloppy.

I tryed a 5B pencil, I have read that Turquoise 4B are really good pencils to draw with.

bugs bunny, working on construction

For this study I use a screen from falling hare, the Bugs has been drawn by McKimson. I really like it to draw, but it is really hard.
This is how I work. I wanna show it so maybe some bloggers have some tips for me and maybe some bloggers will find it usefull.

Blue pencil setup. I scan it in to check the construction. Before I scan it in, I think about what I did wrong. I now think that I did the angle on the head wrong and because of that the line of action isn't smooth. We will see...

Ok, I scanned it in and compared it with the original. I needed to rotate the drawing a bit. The head looks ok. But the body is really bad... So bad I don't know if I wanna fix it. Because the body is wrong I did his arms and etc. also wrong.. I will try to adjust that.
Ok, I think this one whill be decent. I think the carrot will have a wrong angle, but for now I can life with that. Next comparison.
Ok, the biggest mistakes are in his hands. That's OK because I still got trouble with hands.
