I wanted to practice drawing backgrounds, so I drew this drawing (up). I want to keep drawing rough so it doesn't takes too much time to draw until I get more the hang of it. I'ts only practicing.

I made some concept art for a new project I'm working on with some friends (for a game). They wanted to do something less cartoony and I liked to give it a try.

Here are the characters I made, you can see that Im still toying around with it. The anatomic tutorials really helps me allot with it. The hardest thing I find are making the poses.

I also started at making background sketches, that's still something new for me. So I'm also gonna experiment some more on that as well.

O yeah, we (Harmke and I) did some inking for John K a while back and in return we got some T-shirts with the inks on it. Awesome!

John K posted some covers on his blog, I used one of them to make a background study.

I want to learn how to make drawings like this. Where backgrounds and characters are one whole. With this study im trying to understand how the artist is planning this, so I could apply it to my own drawings.
Here I made a study, it's quite hard because you have to manage allot of things. I did it quite fast and think I could have done a better job if I take some more time for it. I will do that next time, I think I can learn really allot of these study's.

It was all about acting, so I made all these doodles. After I got feedback from Sherm I made these new doodles (under). Im trying to get more fluid drawings. Strong line of action and a strong and clear silhouette.

Im doing a 10 week course from Sherm Cohen. Known from making storyboards for Ren and Stimpy, Hey Arnlod, Spongebob and many more. You really should check out his blog if you didn't do that before, it's really awesome. It's a real honor to be in this course and Im trying to learn as much as possible. These drawings are from week 1. It was about what to show and not so much about drawing a final storyboard.

After this I got feedback from Sherm and wanted to do something with it. So I made this version. Still a bit rough but more finished then the first one, there are still things I want to change about (at the end I want to make a new version of this one and want to make it better). But everything in small steps. Besides that I want to learn how to draw more appealing in photoshop, I still don't like how my drawings/doodles turn out in photoshop compared with my pencil drawings.

At the moment Im practising drawing the characters. These are just a few and are gonna post some more soon. It's a really good way for me to learn how to draw poses. There's still something I don't like about my poses, especially from the alien. But I can't nail it what is bothering me about them.

Recently I didn't post allot of studies, like I always did. But I still making them. I still take allot of drawings from John K's blog and study them. Evry day I try to do a couple, to warm up or to finish a day. It only takes a bit too much time to scan them all in, like I used to do. But it's still important to study.

At the same time I do practicing to make my own original drawings, but I'm not a writer and I find it hard to come up with own ideas. I do learn allot from the storyboard course I'm following. I hope I will post some ideas for some own characters soon.

After the portfolio night last week I have drawn the conclusion for myself that I need to go further with the way I was going. But besides the technical things Im practicing I need to develop myself also on the conceptual side. I want to grow in creating my own world's, wit original and fresh characters, props and backgrounds. I want to do this by doodling in theme's. But are theme's enough to motivate myself enough to create. Don't I need a strong back-story and a good concept? I think that will help, but I can't come up with a good back-story or a good concept in such a good time. But I want to work on that as well. For now I assume I don't have to think that much yet and try too come up with new shapes by doodling.

The first theme I want to try this out with is creating an world, actually a universe where is taking place an adventure with space ships, mechanical enemy's and a hero. My target is to create allot of fun doodles and work at least 3 doodles out to pencil drawings. I want to make it less generic then I used to do, by making it more exaggerating and use crazy and funny shapes in the designs.

New Talent Portfolio Night

On Thursday the 18th, together with Jouri Verhoeven (graphical motion designer) we went to the portfolio night of Blend. This was an event in “pakhuis de Zwijger”, Amsterdam. You could meet all kinds of creative professionals, sort like speed dating. I went there with my portfolio folder with me, on the mission to meet new people and get feedback on my work.

Once arrived and signed in, we entered the room where the event was held. The mood was relaxed with live music. After everything was explained the first rounds started. In total there where 13 rounds from 10 min. each.

The first talk I had was with Jesse van Dijk, he’s an experienced concept artist who knows what he talk about. He was positive about my portfolio, after a few pages he already had a good image about me. I had the feeling that my portfolio hadn't enough variation. But when I asked him about that, he told me that it wasn’t bad to focus on one thing. Actually it’s a good thing, you need to do the things you like doing most and try to get as good as possible in it as you can. That was really great to hear from someone as good like Jesse.

Next conversation was with David B Nieborg. He’s a teacher at the University of Amsterdam. He had allot of tips for me about networking and placing yourself in the market. He gave me a gold tip that I should send my work to all the companies and people that could help me. This is really important, just be open minded and try to make contact. This is definitely something I will do.

Erik Kriek is a comic artist and illustrator. I know his work for some time already and wanted to meet him before. I really liked it that he whas really enthusiastic about my portfolio. I always get allot of energy and motivation from positive feedback. He advised me to work more with paper besides digital. He gave me tips about methods, materials and tools. Really cool to have met Erik!

Hanneke Metselaar from Hanazuki. I had a really awesome conversation with her, I really enjoyed showing my work to here. There was so much to talk about and so little time. The cool thing about the talk was that she had some great sharp feedback about my work. She gave me the tip that I should try to come up with my own really unique characters and story. This is something I really aim at and that I see as one of my greatest challenges. Hanazuki is awesome.

Jiek Weishut, creator of animation & illustration studio the drawing room. Unfortunately we had really few time to talk. Because I had to get the train back home... I showed my work as quick as I could and we talked a bit about it. We agreed to continue the conversation another time. I definitely want to do that.

They’re where so many people I wanted to talk with. But it was so crowded and there was so little time. Besides the conversations with the masters I met some other great people. I’m signing up for next time!

Harmke and I inked a drawing for John. This is the finall drawing. John inked it.

We used illu to ink the original drawing, I learnend how to export the drawing from illu to ps while containing all the layers. You can do this in illu by going to export>psd>keep layers. I never knew that that was possible. But it's quite a heavy process, so it needs some time from your computer.

Finally I got some time now to make some new study drawings. These aren't perfect study's (at all) but Im asking myself how to study drawings. What do we learn when we are making a study and what we don't learn? I often tried to make drawings as accurate as possible. But when I am doing that I really took allot of time and whas really calculating the drawing. I think the good thing is you really learn to see mistakes good, like when I drew a hand to big. But it doesn't felt like drawing natural. These study's I did faster and tried to be as natural as I could.

And tried to think about what I whas doing in steps.

ink tricks tutorial

I wanted to make a little tutorial about digital inking because I sometimes got some questions. These are all tricks for digital inking that helps you but it isn't about how to make a good ink. You should check this piece Is a good line important? from John K about that. My tutorial are more a couple of tips that helps me allot when inking. For basics about inking you can go best to Brian's tutorial about inking or about brushes.

Multiply

I put the original drawing on a seperate layer. You can put it down on the layer you want to ink. But you also can put it on top and that will give you some advantages. If you put the drawing on top you need to select the drawing and go to transperancy>multiply (like in the screenshot above). You now can see trough the original drawing (see in the screen below). If you make the lines you ink with gray (or another color) you can still see the original lines on top of youre ink. I made a small example of that in the screenshot under.

* I don't always do this but sometimes it can help to check.

Point tool

You can select points with the point tool! Cool!

Pen tool

When you ink with the brush the lines youre ink not always are like how you want it to be, they sometimes get too smooth or you want to delete some part of the line.

If you click on the tearoff button like in the image above, you get this easy to use small window with all the pentools.

The convert anchor pen tool is great for making adjustments in the lines. Try it.

Convert tool in action. (above) You can make corners on smooth lines. Click with the convert tool on the handle.

You also should experiment with deleting points and adding points with the tools and look what kind of results you get.

Expand appearance.

When you use the brush you notice that it's just 1 line and you can only adjust that line. If you use expand you can chance the shape with more freedom.

See things better

Illu is a vector program, you can compare it with a 3D program. You see a preview, a calculation.

You can turn off the preview so you can see all the lines. You do that with the short key (command/alt + y).

You can use it to select stuff that's behind the drawing. Or if you want to select a line. You can select things more easy in this mode. And you can check if you didn't forget about lines that you can't see in preview.

A brush looks like this if you turn of the preview, that's why you need to expand appearance to adjust the outlines.

Is it usefull?

2 other things that can help with inking are "select the same" (you can use this to delete lines that you don't want to use anymore in one time!) and "expand" (you can make from 2 shapes 1 shape)

The first pose and character is from the Preston Blair book. It's not a good copy but I wasn't aiming for that this time. The second one is in the Preston Blair book a different character but the same pose. I try to slowly draw own desent poses.

I inked for the first time with a brush pen on paper. When I bought this pen I whas thinking first it was a bad buy but now it is getting better. Im still a bit messing around but I learn allot. The first one I inked very slowly and carefull and the second one a bit faster. I am gonna try to put each day a small amounth of time in inking with this pen and draw poses with characters from Preston Blair (or other good characters)

I inked this one in PS and not in Illu. I think in the end it's a better ink program, because it is more sensitive (also makes it harder). But I really need allot of practise to do it better, I got problems with complexer lines with more angles.

I have the feeling when I am drawing something myself I have always the feeling that is misses something. Drawings above aren't really solid or appealing. I think the only way to work on getting better at this that is to keep on trying.

Line weight could be better of the lion, some lines are too thin. They almost disappear.

On the dude with the pencil I tryed to do really my best. But it's gotten a bit generic. The pencil drawing is really stiff and the lines are too carefull placed. Maybe my drawings needs more "guts".

My girlfriend says that I am drawing too cute. She says that because she knows that I like insane weird stuff... Kinda strange that I don't draw more crazy stuff..

I really admire allot of artist that seems to found what they like to draw (see my list of links).

But maybe it comes with the years and I think that it is usefull to focus on skill and principels first. Im only drawing for 2 years now (since childhood).
